I Don't Know Where They Go
26th August 2023

I don’t know where they go,
they fade as life’s demands fade,
as children depart,
as mortgages reduce,
as life’s pressures finally ease,

the people we thought we needed to be,
they subside,
declining health,
diminishing capabilities
newly found, vulnerabilities,

lit by the low half lights at the end of life,
our true natures remain,
they are quick to laugh, or to anger,
to kindness, or impatience,
there is no hiding there,
souls, they are laid bare,

when my time comes,
I wonder what I will find,
I wonder exactly how much of me,
will unwind.
