Early Morning (City)

Soft and kind and grey, with yellow stripes,
under cold skies a lighter shade of blue,
are city pavements early in a city morning.

Faces floating above, ethereal and removed,
painted introspective with concern,
absent minded-ly processing the lives lived behind.

Work faces for the day arrive more slowly, intermittently,
through coffee,
through work,
through the fear of God,

distracting from self.

Inspiration: watching people's expressions out
and about in the streets on the way to work
early in the morning, in the city, in winter.
