The Care That You Show

The care you showed for River (the cat),
driving in his time of need,
the softness of your nature,
the way you pause for a few seconds before answering a question,
in that brief space the world around you fills with beauty,
with your vulnerability, your strength in overcoming, and your lightness,
with your working to understand, and to do right thing,
in a complex world,
challenges come with being of a different ilk,
of speaking other languages and seeing in other ways,
I find myself looking forward to meetings I know you will attend,
hold close the rare times we get to debrief on goings on,
talk to make sense of this small corner of the world.

…And then the awkward spaces when it is time to move on,
where I long to say something,
…but can’t,
and I think I see something in your eyes, maybe,
…but maybe …I don’t,

And I hurt,
for the world is complex,
and not free of constraint,
but as time passes, and I change,
and the world changes around me,
I wonder at possibilities,
at kaleidoscopic futures,
of excitement, colour …warmth.
